Yeonggwang-gun Forms TF Team to Address Population Decline and Local Extinction

[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, has launched efforts to develop countermeasures to overcome the increasingly severe population decline and the resulting risk of local extinction.

According to the designation and announcement of population decline areas by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the county formed a Population Decline and Local Extinction Response TF team and held a meeting chaired by the vice county governor on the 1st, the county announced on the 2nd.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety designated 89 areas nationwide as population decline areas based on the population decline index to address the serious population issues caused by natural population decrease and social population outflow, which reduce the vitality of local communities. In Jeollanam-do, 16 areas including Yeonggwang-gun were designated.

Accordingly, to respond to special support such as financial and institutional aid provided to population decline areas, including the newly established Local Extinction Response Fund to be distributed next year, the county decided to hold regular TF team meetings in each field to discover effective projects and actively seek response measures.

A county official said, “The TF team was formed to effectively respond to the government's future population vitality project support plans,” adding, “We will continuously seek ways to overcome the local extinction crisis by discovering region-specific projects through active communication and cooperation between departments.”
