View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] Professor Jo Dong-yeon of Seokyeong University, who was recruited as the co-chairman of the election campaign committee for Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, apologized for the personal life controversy raised against her, saying, "I am very sorry and apologetic." Netizens' reactions were divided. Criticisms such as "She is not qualified to work as a public official" clashed with opinions calling it "excessive interference in personal life."
Professor Jo, the 'first recruited talent' of the Democratic Party's campaign committee, was expected to lead the committee based on her expertise in security, youth, women, and aviation fields. However, controversy arose when suspicions surfaced that she had an extramarital child while maintaining her marriage with her ex-husband, which led to their divorce.
This controversy was sparked by the conservative-leaning YouTube channel "Garosero Research Institute" (Gaseyeon), which claimed suspicions related to Professor Jo's personal life. Kang Yong-seok, a lawyer affiliated with Gaseyeon, posted on his Facebook on the 30th of last month that he had received tips regarding suspicions about Professor Jo. In his post, he added, "I cross-checked through about four or five sources among graduates of the Korea Military Academy, and they all knew almost the same."
In response, the Democratic Party stated, "Mr. Kang Yong-seok's Facebook post is completely untrue," and announced plans for legal action. Kim Jin-wook, spokesperson for Lee's campaign committee, also warned, "We will take strong legal measures against the act of spreading false information."
However, on the 2nd, Professor Jo said on KBS Radio's "Choi Kyung-young's Strongest Current Affairs," "Many people must have clearly felt discomfort. I am very sorry and apologetic." She continued, "From the beginning, the marriage was somewhat unbalanced, and it ended with wounds on both sides," adding, "There were children to protect, and I had to take care of my mother who had worked hard all her life, so no matter what was said, I endured it as if my life depended on it."
Among netizens, reactions included comments such as "If you want to step forward, you should behave properly," "Didn't the Democratic Party say they would sue? This means they have admitted the rumors," and "The problem is the extramarital child, not the divorce; this is inappropriate for a public official." One netizen expressed concern, saying, "I'm worried the child will be hurt. Don't sin more against your child."
On the other hand, some netizens responded that the public's attack on Professor Jo was excessive, saying, "There are many worse people, but nitpicking over personal life," and "Is there a reason to dig into personal family matters?"
Meanwhile, 39-year-old Professor Jo is a working mom in her 30s and an expert in military and space industries. She joined the campaign as Lee's first recruited talent and co-chairman of the election campaign committee. She currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Military Studies at Seokyeong University and director of the Future Defense Technology Startup Center. She is a graduate of the 60th class of the Korea Military Academy and served for 17 years, including assignments to the Iraq Zaytun Unit and the ROK-US Combined Forces Command.
