Sejong Ranks First Nationwide in 'Traffic Safety Index' for Two Consecutive Years
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City has secured the nationwide No. 1 position for two consecutive years in the Traffic Safety Index conducted by the Korea Road Traffic Authority.
According to the city on the 2nd, the Traffic Safety Index comprehensively evaluates the level of traffic safety by considering population and road length based on the number of accidents and casualties categorized by severity across basic local governments nationwide.
The evaluation items are divided into 18 detailed indicators across 6 areas. The targets are grouped by regional size into ‘cities with a population of 300,000 or more,’ ‘cities with a population under 300,000,’ ‘county-level areas,’ and ‘district-level areas,’ with evaluations conducted accordingly.
Sejong is included in the ‘cities with a population of 300,000 or more’ group and received a total score of 82.48 points, achieving first place in the group for two consecutive years.
Previously, the city was the first nationwide to fully implement the ‘5030 Policy’ in 2017, improved the Traffic Safety Index to the highest level through public-private cooperation such as expanding traffic safety infrastructure in 2019, establishing a comprehensive child traffic safety plan in 2020, and activities of the traffic safety public reporting group.
In particular, in this evaluation, the city achieved an A grade in all six detailed areas: ▲ Commercial Vehicles (81.91 points) ▲ Bicycles and Two-Wheelers (80.90 points) ▲ Pedestrians (82.57 points) ▲ Vulnerable Road Users (84.02 points) ▲ Drivers (81.40 points) ▲ Road Environment (84.07 points).
Sejong is the only local government to receive an A grade in all areas.

Meanwhile, in the Traffic Safety Index, Taebaek City ranked first in the under 300,000 population city group, Inje County in Gangwon Province ranked first in the county-level group, and Dong-gu in Gwangju ranked first in the district-level group.
