[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 1st that it was selected as an excellent local government in this year's National Policy Goal Implementation Excellent Local Government Competition hosted by the Local Autonomy Human Resources Development Institute.
The National Policy Goal Implementation Excellent Local Government Competition was organized to discover excellent cases of local governments implementing national policy goals and to share and spread their achievements. A total of 94 cases were submitted, and after expert evaluation, online public voting, on-site evaluation, and presentation evaluation, 7 excellent cases were finally selected.
The city was highly evaluated for revitalizing the declining old downtown by creating safe school routes and ecological playgrounds through the "Nation's First Suncheon Nam Elementary School School Regeneration Special Project," utilizing the school's idle spaces as community and educational spaces for local residents.
In particular, it was reported that the project received high marks for promoting customized urban regeneration by having students and residents directly participate from the planning and design stages to operation, enabling facility placement and space configuration tailored to their needs.

Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, "I was quite saddened by the sharp decline in the number of students at Suncheon Nam Elementary School, the first elementary school in Suncheon with a history of 114 years." He added, "I hope this case, which revitalized the area around the school and strengthened the local community by rebirth of the school's idle spaces according to the needs of local residents, will spread nationwide and successfully achieve the government's national policy goal of decentralized development."
