Orion Supplies Eco-Friendly Packaging Materials for Convenience Store CU PB Products
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Orion announced on the 1st that it will produce and supply eco-friendly packaging materials for convenience store CU PB products using flexographic printing equipment.
The eco-friendly flexographic printed packaging materials produced by Orion are used as outer packaging for more than 10 types of PB products sold at convenience store CU. The supply of eco-friendly packaging materials aims to realize a shared goal of engaging in eco-friendly activities together with distributors and others, as well as to spread an eco-friendly consumption culture. Unlike gravure printing, flexographic printing is an environmentally friendly printing method that reduces the use of ink and organic solvents by about 50% through a relief printing method. Orion contributes to environmental protection by using water-based ink jointly developed with partner companies.
In 2019, Orion became the first domestic confectionery company to invest 7 billion KRW to introduce flexographic printing equipment. Currently, packaging for 38 products including ‘Choco Pie,’ ‘Poca Chip,’ ‘Sun of the Sun,’ and ‘Oh! Potato’ is manufactured using flexographic printing. Compared to gravure printing, this method reduces the annual use of ink and organic solvents by approximately 400 tons. Orion plans to invest an additional 5 billion KRW in flexographic printing equipment by the end of this year to expand its facilities and produce packaging for all products using the flexographic method in the future. The cost savings from reduced ink usage are returned to consumers through the ‘Good Packaging Project,’ which increases product quantity without raising prices, and major products have been increased in volume.
As part of its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, Orion is conducting various eco-friendly activities domestically and internationally. In March, it established a ‘Global Carbon Emission Integrated Management System’ and is strengthening group-level eco-friendly management activities. A ‘Green TFT’ composed of practical staff from six departments including production, facilities, and management was newly established. At the Shanghai plant of its Chinese subsidiary, additional wastewater sediment drying facilities were introduced to reduce waste, and the Mih Phu plant of its Vietnamese subsidiary installed solar power generation facilities that convert solar energy into electricity for product manufacturing.
