North Korean Defector Who Escaped Chinese Prison Arrested After 41 Days
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] A North Korean defector who escaped from a Chinese prison was captured by the public security authorities after 41 days on the run.
The Jilin Provincial Public Security Bureau announced on the 28th that they arrested the escapee Joo Hyun-geon (39) in Jilin City.
Joo, who was incarcerated in a Jilin prison, escaped on the afternoon of the 18th of last month by climbing onto a temporary building inside the prison and scaling the wall. The public security authorities issued a public warrant for him and offered a reward of 150,000 yuan (approximately 27 million KRW). After more than a month without capture, the reward was increased to 700,000 yuan (approximately 130 million KRW).

Joo entered China in July 2013 and committed multiple thefts at private homes in Jilin Province, during which he seriously injured a resident by stabbing them with a weapon. The Chinese court sentenced Joo to 11 years and 3 months in prison and fined him 16,000 yuan.
