In Italy, 'Corona Infection Party'... "I will get infected, recover, and get a pass"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Seoyoung] Amid the spread of the COVID-19 variant 'Omicron,' so-called 'COVID-19 infection parties' have been held in Italy, putting authorities on high alert.
On the 24th (local time), The Independent cited local Italian media reports, stating, "A considerable number of 'COVID-19 infection parties' are being held in Italy." According to the report, attendees participated in these parties to obtain the 'Green Pass,' which is required for entering restaurants, bars, and using public transportation.
Currently, Italy issues Green Passes to those who have completed COVID-19 vaccination or have recovered from a COVID-19 infection. Because of this, people who claim they want to get infected and recover from COVID-19 instead of getting vaccinated have flocked to these COVID-19 infection parties to obtain the Green Pass.
According to the Bolzano health authorities, these COVID-19 infection parties are mainly held secretly in outdoor bars or private homes where the Green Pass is not required. It is known that attendees attempted to get infected by using beer glasses previously used by infected individuals or by hugging confirmed COVID-19 patients.
The Independent also reported that a man in his 50s who attended a COVID-19 party in Bolzano eventually died from a COVID-19 infection. Additionally, three people who attended parties in other regions were admitted to intensive care units due to COVID-19 infection.
In response, Italian authorities announced they will launch an investigation into these illegal parties that deliberately spread the virus. Patrick Franzoni, the Bolzano quarantine officer, warned, "Even young people can experience severe symptoms or suffer from aftereffects if infected with COVID-19."

Furthermore, Italian authorities explained that they will introduce a 'Super Green Pass' system, which strengthens the existing Green Pass system. Starting from the 6th of next month, a Green Pass will be required to enter almost all public facilities, including cultural and sports facilities, and a negative COVID-19 test certificate will no longer be accepted as a substitute for the Green Pass.
