Activation of Unification Security Tourism in the Demilitarized Zone Area and Securing a Foothold for Eurasian Expansion
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] The Korea Rail Network Authority announced on the 26th that it has completed the electrification work on the 3.7km section between Imjingang Station and Dorasan Station on the Gyeongui Line, and will open it on the 27th.
Since the opening of the Gyeongui Line in 2002, the Authority has invested 34.8 billion KRW to electrify the non-electrified section between Imjingang Station and Dorasan Station, carrying out improvements to the existing tracks and expansion work at Dorasan Station. With the completion of this electrification project, shuttle electric trains that were previously unable to operate due to the lack of electrification can now extend their service to Dorasan Station.
According to the 2000 inter-Korean agreement, the 27.3km single-track section between Munsan, Imjingang, Panmun, and Kaesong (12.0km on the South side and 15.3km on the North side) was restored. The 6km non-electrified section between Munsan Station and Imjingang Station was electrified in March 2020, and shuttle electric trains currently operate round trips twice on weekdays and four times on holidays.
