Cargo Ship Grounded in Shallow Waters off Myodo, Yeosu
Ran Aground Near Shore Due to Rudder Malfunction
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] A cargo ship navigating off Myodo, Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, ran aground in a shallow coastal area due to a steering gear failure, but no casualties or marine pollution occurred.
According to the Yeosu Coast Guard, at around 10:48 p.m. on the 24th, a 4,500-ton cargo ship A ran aground with its bow resting toward the coast in a shallow coastal area northeast of Myodo, Yeosu City, due to a steering gear malfunction. However, no casualties or surrounding marine pollution were found upon inspection.
The Yeosu Coast Guard attempted to refloat the ship using two tugboats, but the hull did not move. They retried the refloating operation around 10 a.m. on the 25th, utilizing the high tide, and successfully completed the operation.
It is presumed that the cargo ship A’s generator suddenly stopped while navigating to enter the Gwangyang Port pier, causing the steering gear to fail and the hull to run aground near the coast.
A Yeosu Coast Guard official stated, “We are continuously monitoring the ship’s safety until the high tide and will investigate the exact cause of the accident by questioning the ship’s personnel and crew.”
