President Moon Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Human Rights Commission at the 'Sanctuary of Democratization'
National Human Rights Commission 20th Anniversary Ceremony at Myeongdong Cathedral... "Socially Vulnerable Still in Human Rights Blind Spots"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in, a former human rights lawyer, attended the 20th anniversary ceremony of the National Human Rights Commission held at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, known as the "sanctuary of democratization," on the morning of the 25th, encouraging those who have worked hard to promote human rights in Korea.
In his congratulatory speech, President Moon evaluated the achievements of the Human Rights Commission in creating a public forum on human rights issues and proposing solutions. He also emphasized efforts to address new challenges such as protecting the human rights of socially vulnerable and marginalized groups still left in blind spots, as well as the increasingly sharp issues of discrimination and hatred.
The National Human Rights Commission was established on November 25, 2001, as an independent national organization dedicated to human rights protection, formed through the will of human rights civil society organizations, the government, and the aspirations of the people. The Blue House explained that President Moon’s direct attendance at the 20th anniversary ceremony signifies an intention to raise social awareness about human rights.
The Blue House stated, "Since taking office, President Moon has regularized special reports to the president under Article 29 of the National Human Rights Commission Act and restored the personnel and organization of the Human Rights Commission, thereby enhancing the weakened status of the Commission."
The Blue House further explained, "While spreading the human rights philosophy that 'human rights have no full stop,' he has shown special interest by declaring the opening of the era of an independent national human rights organization 2.0, aiming for a new 20 years."
