Gyeonggi-do to Promote Installation of Air Purification Systems on Intercity Buses Starting Next Year
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will promote a project to distribute 'smart air purification devices' for intercity buses starting next year.
The smart air purification device converts indoor polluted air into clean air through a pre-filter (removes large dust), carbon filter (removes odor substances), HEPA filter (removes fine dust and ultrafine dust), and UV sterilization lamp (sterilizes airborne bacteria and viruses).
Gyeonggi Province previously conducted a pilot project on 20 intercity buses, proving the effectiveness with a 30-50% reduction in fine dust (PM2.5), ultrafine dust (PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2), and airborne bacteria concentrations.
Given the nature of intercity buses where passengers must ride for long periods in a confined space, it is expected to protect passengers' health and improve convenience.
This project was promoted by directly applying fine dust reduction projects discovered through the 2019 'Fine Dust Reduction Public Idea Contest' to daily life and verifying their effectiveness.
From February last year to July this year, the province conducted a 'fine dust reduction device pilot project,' selecting ▲smart air purification devices for intercity buses (public transportation sector), ▲classroom fine dust heat exchange purification devices (educational facilities sector), and ▲new technology fine dust protection benches for multi-use facilities (multi-use facilities sector). Devices were developed and installed, and performance was verified through scientific measurement and statistical analysis methods.
Among these three projects, the 'smart air purification device for intercity buses' project, which showed the highest reduction effect, was selected as a new project for next year.
Park Dae-geun, head of the Fine Dust Countermeasures Division of the province, said, "With the establishment of next year's budget and the expansion and distribution of indoor air purification devices for intercity buses, passengers on intercity buses in the province will be able to use them with peace of mind from polluted indoor air." He emphasized, "Going forward, Gyeonggi Province will actively discover and introduce new fine dust technologies in daily life to ensure that residents can breathe clean air."
