5·18 Investigation Committee: "Truth-finding Will Continue Regardless of Jeon Du-hwan's Death"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The 5·18 Democratic Movement Truth Commission (Chairman Song Seontae) announced that despite the death of Jeon Du-hwan, it will continue a strict investigation to uncover the truth of the 5·18 Democratic Movement in accordance with the authority and responsibility granted by law.
On the 23rd, the 5·18 Investigation Committee issued a statement saying, "We cannot help but feel regret over the death of Jeon Du-hwan," and added, "In 1997, the Supreme Court confirmed a life sentence for Jeon in relation to the bloody suppression of the 5·18 Democratic Movement, convicting him of charges including rebellion ringleader and murder for the purpose of rebellion."
It continued, "Jeon had opportunities over the past 41 years to reveal the truth and apologize to the victims and the public, but he consistently responded with excuses and denial," asserting that "this has exacerbated the suffering of the victims of the 5·18 Democratic Movement."
Furthermore, "Our commission sent investigation notices and summonses to key figures involved in rebellion and murder for the purpose of rebellion, including Jeon Du-hwan, but Jeon refused citing chronic illness," and "Nevertheless, our commission has been continuing to pursue interview investigations," it claimed.
It added, "Regardless of Jeon's death, the investigation will proceed, and we urge the core figures of the new military regime to confess the truth before the public and history without delay."
