[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] On the 21st, three weeks after the phased daily recovery (With Corona) was implemented, COVID-19 confirmed cases surged across the country.
According to the quarantine authorities and local governments including Seoul City, from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day, a total of 1,583 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded nationwide. This is the total number of confirmed cases in 16 out of 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, excluding Busan. It is 434 more than the same time on the 14th, a week ago (1,149 cases).
Usually, the number of tests decreases over weekends and holidays, leading to a decline in confirmed cases until the beginning of the week, but due to the continued spread, this weekend effect seems to have had no impact.
Looking at the regions where confirmed cases were reported that day, 1,186 cases were in the metropolitan area and 397 cases in non-metropolitan areas. By the 16 metropolitan cities and provinces: Seoul 638, Gyeonggi 409, Incheon 139, Gyeongnam 59, Daegu 52, Gwangju and Gangwon 51 each, Chungnam 47, Gyeongbuk 39, Daejeon 23, Chungbuk 21, Jeonnam 18, Jeju 17, Jeonbuk 13, and Ulsan 6. No confirmed cases have yet been reported in Sejong.
Since there is still time left until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0:00 on the 22nd is expected to increase further.

The number of new confirmed cases reported daily over the past week from the 15th to that day were 2,005 → 2,124 → 3,187 → 3,292 → 3,034 → 3,206 → 3,120, averaging about 2,853 cases per day. The average daily number of locally transmitted confirmed cases, excluding imported cases, is about 2,832.
