[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SKC has selected Poland as its production base for copper foil in Europe. On the 18th (local time), SKC and SKC's copper foil manufacturing investment company SK Nexilis announced that they signed an investment agreement with the Polish authorities at the Rzeszow University of Technology in Stalowa Wola, Poland, to build a copper foil factory in the nearby E-Mobility industrial complex.
Copper foil is a thin film made of copper through advanced processing technology and is a key material used in anode materials for secondary batteries. Since May, SKC has been negotiating investment conditions with the Polish government to build copper foil production facilities in Europe, where many secondary battery manufacturers are located.
SKC plans to invest about 900 billion KRW here to build a copper foil production facility with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons. The goal is to start construction in the first half of next year and begin commercial production as early as 2024.
The E-Mobility industrial complex is a future industrial complex designated by the Polish government as a special law in August. The company explained that it has excellent customer accessibility as it is located 5 to 8 hours away from major global secondary battery manufacturers' factories, and it can also enjoy various tax and administrative procedure simplification benefits.
SKC plans to introduce an innovative production process applying advanced technology to its European factory and is considering increasing the total production capacity in Europe to 100,000 tons. The company is also promoting an investment of 50,000 tons in the United States. By adding 52,000 tons in Jeongeup, Jeonbuk, 50,000 tons in Malaysia, and 100,000 tons in Europe, SKC aims to expand its production capacity to 250,000 tons by 2025 and solidify its position as the world's number one copper foil manufacturer.
