Police Refer Lawmaker Han Mu-kyung for Violation of Mountain Area Management Act... Fourth Sitting Lawmaker Referred
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police investigating allegations of real estate speculation by members of the National Assembly have reportedly sent Han Mu-gyeong, a member of the People Power Party (proportional representation), to the prosecution.
According to the police on the 15th, Representative Han was recently sent to the prosecution on charges of violating the Mountainous Districts Management Act.
This is the fourth time a sitting lawmaker has been sent to the prosecution on real estate-related charges. Previously, the police sent Kim Gyeong-hyeop of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is accused of purchasing land in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province, his electoral district, without reporting it; Jeong Chan-min of the People Power Party, who was detained on charges of receiving undue benefits from a housing construction company during his tenure as mayor of Yongin; and Kim Seung-su of the People Power Party, who is accused of violating the Farmland Act.
However, the initial allegation of violating the Farmland Act was decided not to be prosecuted. The issue reported by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission to the police involved Representative Han purchasing farmland in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province, in 2004 and 2006 and not cultivating it personally. Representative Han’s office released a statement on the day saying, "We understand that the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency notified the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on the 12th that they decided not to prosecute regarding the allegations of violating the Farmland Act."
