Unvaccinated Individuals Targeted for Quarantine Amid COVID-19 Resurgence
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As COVID-19 resurges even after vaccination, various countries around the world are implementing quarantine measures targeting the unvaccinated.
The Austrian government will restrict the movement of unvaccinated individuals aged 12 and older starting from the 15th (local time). Those going out for reasons other than vaccination, commuting to work, grocery shopping, or taking walks will face fines up to 1,450 euros (approximately 1.96 million KRW).
Austria's vaccination rate remains at 63.4% of the total population. Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said, "Other countries have higher vaccination rates (than us)" and added, "It is shameful that the vaccination rate is low despite sufficient vaccine supply."
France requires unvaccinated travelers from eight European countries with rapidly rising cases, including Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, to submit a negative PCR test result issued within 24 hours upon entry.
The United States is applying mandatory vaccination policies even to private companies. Unvaccinated individuals must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and wear masks during work hours.
Major corporations such as Google, Facebook, Walt Disney, United Airlines, and Walmart have voluntarily mandated vaccinations for their employees. United Airlines has initiated dismissal procedures for unvaccinated employees.
Singapore requires unvaccinated individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to bear their own medical expenses. This measure aims to increase vaccination rates, as unvaccinated people are seen as placing a heavy burden on the healthcare system.
