On the 15th (Korean time) at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, USA (par 70, 6,353 yards), the final day of the 2021 LPGA Tour Pelican Women's Championship (total prize money $1.75 million), Kim shot 3-under par to tie with Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson (both USA), and Lydia Ko (New Zealand) at 17-under par 263. However, she was eliminated after making par on the first hole of the playoff at the 18th hole (par 4). Her 13th career win, which would have come one year after winning this tournament last November, was also thwarted.
Starting from a tie for 4th place, 2 strokes behind, Kim recorded 4 birdies and 1 bogey. In the front nine, she showed clean play by making birdies on the 3rd hole (par 3) and the 7th hole (par 5). After a bogey on the 11th hole (par 4) to catch her breath, she demonstrated resilience by adding birdies on the 13th hole (par 4) and the final 18th hole. However, in the playoff, her tee shot landed in a bunker, causing her to fall behind in the race for the championship. Although her powerful drives averaged 308 yards, 31 putts hampered her performance.
World No. 1 Korda suffered a critical triple bogey on the 17th hole (par 4) but was the only player to make a birdie on the first playoff hole. This marked her 4th win of the season and 7th career victory since the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June, with a winner's prize of $262,500 (about 310 million KRW). Thompson lost a stroke on the 18th hole, forcing a playoff. Her dream of a 12th career win, her first in 2 years and 5 months since the ShopRite Classic in June 2019, also evaporated.
