The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the day, 2,248 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 377,712.
Although this is 96 fewer than the previous day (2,344), the number remained in the 2,000 range for four consecutive days, continuing the spread. It is 144 more than last Friday's (Saturday by announcement date) 2,104 new cases.
Looking at the new cases reported daily over the past week from the 31st of last month to this day, the numbers were 2,061 → 1,685 → 1,589 → 2,667 → 2,482 → 2,344 → 2,248, averaging about 2,153 cases per day.
Since the phased daily recovery began on the 1st of this month, quarantine measures have been relaxed and mobility has increased, raising the risk of infection transmission. The health authorities also view the increase in cases as inevitable for the time being. Under the phased daily recovery system, the government plans to focus more on the number of severe and critical patients rather than the simple scale of confirmed cases.
However, the number of severe and critical patients has recently increased noticeably. On this day, there were 411 severe and critical patients, 29 more than the previous day (382). The number of severe and critical patients exceeding 400 is the first time in 67 days since August 31 (409 patients).
Looking at the daily number of severe and critical patients over the past week, the figures were 332 → 343 → 347 → 378 → 365 → 382 → 411. The number, which had been maintaining around 330 to 340, surged this week.
The government believes that under the current medical system, severe and critical patients under 500 can be managed stably, but in preparation for the increase in confirmed cases, it issued an administrative order the previous day to secure additional hospital beds in medical institutions in the metropolitan area.
On this day, the infection routes of new confirmed cases were 2,219 local transmissions and 29 imported cases. By region, Seoul had 912 cases, Gyeonggi 687, Incheon 142, with the metropolitan area accounting for 1,741 cases (78.5%), showing a pattern of spread centered on the metropolitan area.
The number of suspected patient tests at screening clinics on the previous day was 47,520, and tests at temporary screening clinics were 106,340, totaling 153,860 tests conducted.
As of this day, the vaccination completion rate was 76.5%. The total number of people who completed vaccination by receiving all recommended doses was 39,261,124 as of midnight.
First-dose vaccinations continued, with 68,878 people newly vaccinated the previous day. The cumulative number of first-dose recipients is 41,470,313, about 80.8% of the population, and 92.6% when considering only the population aged 18 and over.
New cases suspected of adverse reactions after vaccination reported to health authorities totaled 4,839 over the three days from the 3rd to the 5th. There were 17 additional death reports during these three days. Authorities plan to investigate the causal relationship between vaccination and deaths.
