[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] The prosecution has once again demanded a 20-year prison sentence for a man in his 20s who was charged with beating his 29-day-old daughter to death.
The 15th Criminal Division of Suwon District Court (Presiding Judge Jo Hyu-ok) concluded the resumed trial of A (20), who was detained and indicted on charges including violation of the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (child abuse resulting in death).
The prosecution again requested a 20-year prison sentence for A. They also asked the court to order A to complete 200 hours of a child abuse treatment program and impose a 10-year employment restriction at child and youth-related institutions.
In the final statement, the defense said, "A’s parents divorced when he was young, and he has a painful past," adding, "Although he cared for the child under difficult and abnormal circumstances, his love for the deceased baby is no different from that of other fathers." They further requested, "We acknowledge the parts where he admits guilt, but we ask for the maximum leniency regarding the other parts."
A stated in his final statement, "I will live with a repentant heart."
Earlier, A was indicted on charges of beating his 29-day-old daughter B to death at his home in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi Province, around 9 p.m. on January 2, 2021.
According to the investigation, A struck B’s forehead 2 to 3 times with his right hand wearing a gold ring because she would not sleep. B showed symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage and eventually died around 10 p.m. the same day.
At the sentencing hearing held on June 17, the prosecution stated, "Due to A’s continuous abuse, B died from cerebral hemorrhage. This fact is confirmed through forensic examination," and added, "A’s indifferent attitude toward B’s death should be regarded as a crime equivalent to homicide," requesting a 20-year prison sentence.
