Bezos Loses... NASA to Develop Lunar Lander with Musk (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, lost a lawsuit against the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) seeking to cancel the contract for the lunar lander development project, paving the way for Elon Musk's SpaceX and NASA to resume their contract.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 4th (local time), the U.S. federal court ruled in favor of NASA in the lawsuit filed by Bezos, stating that NASA's selection of Elon Musk, Tesla CEO's SpaceX as the sole contractor for the lunar lander development was illegal and inappropriate.
After the lawsuit was dismissed, NASA announced, "We will resume work with SpaceX, which was suspended during the lawsuit, as soon as possible." Bezos also tweeted, "This ruling is not the decision we wanted, but we respect the court's judgment."
Earlier, in April, NASA had selected SpaceX as the sole contractor for the lunar lander development project participating in the Artemis Project, humanity's plan to return to the moon. Blue Origin, a private space exploration company led by Bezos, claimed that NASA had unfairly signed a sole contractor contract with SpaceX and protested to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review the appropriateness of the contract.
In response, the GAO dismissed Blue Origin's protest, stating there was no problem with NASA's decision on the lunar lander contractor, and Blue Origin proceeded with litigation to overturn NASA's decision. Bezos argued in the lawsuit that NASA overlooked safety issues when evaluating SpaceX's proposal.
The Artemis Project contract awarded to Musk's SpaceX is worth $2.9 billion and involved participants including Blue Origin and Dynetics. The Artemis Project is humanity's plan to return to the moon with a manned landing by 2024, initiated during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
WSJ reported that Blue Origin's efforts to win the lunar lander development contract were thwarted by this court decision.
