Police Request Arrest Warrant for Jeong Hyun-bok, Mayor of Gwangyang, Over Alleged Real Estate Speculation and Hiring Corruption
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The police have requested an arrest warrant for Jeong Hyunbok, the former mayor of Gwangyang, Jeonnam, who has been accused of real estate speculation and personnel recruitment corruption.
According to the Jeonnam Police Agency on the 4th, the police applied charges including violation of the Anti-Corruption Act and abuse of authority against Mayor Jeong Hyunbok and requested an arrest warrant.
The police suspect that Mayor Jeong provided preferential treatment by obtaining internal information in advance regarding the construction of a road on land owned by his wife and son, as well as the alleged unfair hiring of relatives of close associates.
It is reported that Mayor Jeong denied most of the allegations.
The police conducted a search and seizure of Gwangyang City Hall and Mayor Jeong's residence in June and investigated about 30 officials and others.

Mayor Jeong, who was diagnosed with blood cancer, has been on medical leave since March and has been traveling to and from Seoul for treatment.
