The Professional Research Personnel system is a supplementary military service alternative system that supports the use of research personnel for 36 months at military service designated companies (research institutes) selected by the Military Manpower Administration Commissioner for the development of national science and technology. When a recommender receives applications and evaluates the scale of research personnel, etc., they recommend to the Military Manpower Administration Commissioner, who selects companies mainly through on-site investigations of excellent companies.
It is known that 550 companies applied for the military service designated companies in the second half of 2021. Through this system, small and medium-sized enterprises can secure excellent personnel in science and engineering fields, and students who have obtained degrees have the advantage of substituting military service while enhancing their research and development capabilities in the field, making it very popular.
