Concept is 'Lee Jae-myung Style'... Maintaining the Camp Framework
Key Positions Balanced by Faction... Emphasizing One Team Image
[Asia Economy Reporters Koo Chae-eun, Jeon Jin-young] The election campaign committee for Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, will be launched on the 2nd. The Democratic Party set the concept of the launch ceremony held that afternoon as ‘Lee Jae-myung-ness.’ According to the party, Lee Jae-myung-ness means ‘clarity that pushes forward like a bulldozer with reckless but righteous actions.’ They also plan to attract national attention with a large-scale and faction-inclusive campaign committee personnel composition. The launch of the Democratic Party’s campaign committee is about 20 days ahead of the People Power Party, which is still undergoing primary procedures.
The launch ceremony of the campaign committee, held that afternoon at the KSPO Dome in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul, will begin with a performance symbolizing candidate Lee, who was a former child laborer, and an introduction of the national campaign committee. Thirteen people, including lawmakers Seol Hoon and Hong Young-pyo, who had called themselves ‘Lee Jae-myung snipers,’ will serve as co-chairs, and all 169 affiliated lawmakers will participate in the mammoth campaign committee launch ceremony. While seeking the momentum for the March presidential election next year, expected to be a close race between candidates from both parties, from a ‘one team’ approach, traces of strengthening Lee’s clarity can be seen throughout the launch ceremony.
Floor leader Yoon Ho-jung said at the National Assembly floor leaders’ meeting that morning, “Starting from the launch ceremony, Lee’s capabilities and the Democratic Party’s history will be strongly united as one,” and “We will devote all our capabilities in the floor to maximize ‘Lee Jae-myung-ness.’” A senior Democratic Party lawmaker told this outlet in a phone interview, “We will target the fact that the leading opposition candidates have not shown ‘Yoon Seok-yeol-ness’ or ‘Hong Joon-pyo-ness’ at all through the campaign committee.”
The Democratic Party prides itself on differentiating from previous campaign committees starting from the personnel composition. It is clear that they expect total party mobilization through a personnel composition that embraces internal forces and factions. Former party leaders Lee Nak-yeon and Chung Sye-kyun, who fiercely competed during the primary, serve as standing advisors to the campaign committee. Notably, lawmakers Park Kwang-on and Oh Young-hoon, who supported former leader Lee Nak-yeon, participate as co-chief of the campaign headquarters and senior spokesperson of the public relations team, respectively, drawing attention.

With standing campaign committee chair Song Young-gil and additional appointments, the number is expected to reach 13. Key figures on Lee’s side include lawmaker Jung Sung-ho as head of the general special advisory group, lawmaker Park Hong-geun as chief secretary, and lawmaker Kim Young-jin as head of the situation room. While maintaining the framework of the Lee Jae-myung camp, most key positions are organized under a ‘joint’ system, emphasizing factional balance and integration.

Lawmaker Kim Nam-guk, who served as chief of staff for Lee’s campaign during the primary, appeared on the radio that day and explained, “Usually, when forming a campaign committee, high-ranking lawmakers with many terms are assigned as campaign headquarters chiefs, but this time, first- and second-term lawmakers are appointed as heads of the situation room,” adding, “It is a campaign committee to embody a concept of integration and openness.” The heads of the situation room include second-term lawmakers Kim Young-jin, Jo Eung-cheon, and Jin Sung-jun, along with first-term lawmaker Ko Min-jung. Floor spokesperson Han Jun-ho, who hosted the launch ceremony, told reporters that morning, “It is significant that previous participants in Lee Jae-myung’s camp have stepped back as second-line, and those who were active in each camp or as rival primary candidates have taken major positions.” Meanwhile, the launch ceremony will proceed for about an hour in the order of a child laborer opening, resolution performance, campaign committee launch declaration, national cheering squad introduction, candidate support speech, 70-year history video, letter reading, and candidate Lee’s speech.
