President Moon's COP26 Keynote Speech, North Korean Ambassador Also Listens
Announcement of 40% National Greenhouse Gas Reduction by 2030... Mention of Inter-Korean Forest Cooperation
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] North Korean Ambassador to the UK Choe Il also attentively listened to President Moon Jae-in's keynote speech at COP26 on the 1st (local time), during his visit to the UK to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).
North Korean officials were also present at the COP26 keynote speech venue that day. President Moon took the podium and delivered a keynote speech stating that South Korea would raise its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% compared to 2018 by 2030.
In particular, President Moon said, "We will reduce greenhouse gases across the entire Korean Peninsula through inter-Korean forest cooperation," and "I ask for the international community's support and cooperation for the success of the 'World Forestry Congress' to be held in Korea next May."
President Moon stated, "Growing trees and restoring forests are important solutions to respond to the climate crisis," adding, "It is a way to prevent desertification and promote peace in the border areas."
