Naju-si Urges Timely Onion Planting and Pest Control Measures
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yukbong] The Jeonnam Naju Agricultural Technology Center has urged farmers to complete the onion transplanting (seedling planting) by early this month to ensure safe overwintering as the onion transplanting season approaches.
According to the Agricultural Technology Center on the 1st, transplanting onions too early increases the likelihood of bolting, while transplanting too late can cause frost damage or drying damage, making timely transplanting important.
In such cases, the quantity of marketable produce significantly decreases, so it is advisable to transplant during the appropriate period, which is early this month when the average daily temperature reaches 15℃.
Farmers should disinfect the soil before transplanting and plant healthy seedlings with a height of 25?30 cm, 4 leaves, and a stem diameter of 6?7.5 mm, then promote initial root establishment through sufficient watering.
For fields where leaves are drying or growth is poor, it is recommended to spray either type 4 compound fertilizer or 0.2% urea (40g/20L water) 2?3 times at 5?7 day intervals to aid growth.
In particular, the control methods to prevent onion downy mildew include: ▲ soil drench treatment before transplanting ▲ soaking onion roots for 30 minutes on the day of transplanting before planting ▲ two treatments at 7?10 day intervals after transplanting ▲ one treatment after overwintering, totaling four treatments.
An official from the Agricultural Technology Center said, “Management before and after transplanting is important for producing high-quality onions,” and added, “We will strengthen on-site guidance such as timely transplanting and pest and disease control to help increase farmers’ income.”
