Gwangju City, Nam-gu Baegun Plaza Area 11 Lanes 'Phased' Conversion
Temporary Structure Installation Work in Two Phases from the 9th to April 20 Next Year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Urban Railway Construction Headquarters announced on the 1st that starting from the 9th, 11 lanes around Baegun Square will be converted in phases.
This construction will proceed in two phases until April 20, 2022.
The first phase is from the 9th to January 20, 2022, during which three lanes in front of Donga Hospital will be occupied to install temporary facilities necessary for the construction of the urban railway and the underground road.
The second phase will be from January 21 to April 20, 2022, occupying two lanes in front of Nam-gu Office to carry out temporary facility construction. This traffic conversion is being promoted to secure the minimum working space.
In particular, a U-turn section will be newly established at the Juwol Intersection in front of Donga Hospital to minimize inconvenience for nearby residents.
The Urban Railway Construction Headquarters stated that Baegun Square has been temporarily opened with a total of 11 lanes since the demolition of Baegun Overpass last year, and traffic is currently flowing smoothly. However, once this construction is implemented, it is expected that citizens accustomed to the current lanes will feel more inconvenience, so the traffic conversion will be carried out in phases.
Separately, the intersection between Gidok Hospital and Mirae Children's Hospital will be changed to a three-way intersection system starting from the 8th.
In this section, straight and left turns toward Bongseon-dong and Namgwanggyo were added to detour vehicles due to the demolition of Baegun Overpass, but with the expansion of the urban railway construction area, it will return to the three-way intersection system before the demolition of Baegun Overpass.
Accordingly, straight and left turns from Baegun-dong direction to Bongseon-dong direction will be prohibited.
Earlier, the Traffic Management Countermeasure Working Council, composed of related organizations and departments such as Gwangju City Traffic Policy Research Office, Gwangju Police Agency, and Road Traffic Authority, gathered traffic experts in one place to discuss the traffic management plan and finalized this proposal.
In addition, the Traffic Management Countermeasure Working Council prepared traffic management measures for traffic conversion sections and habitual congestion areas, including ▲additional deployment of exemplary traffic controllers at major intersections ▲maintenance and supplementation of traffic safety facilities at construction sites ▲strengthening crackdown on illegal parking and stopping.
Jung Daekyung, head of the Urban Railway Construction Headquarters, said, “Due to the subway and underground road construction around Baegun Square, where vehicle traffic volume is high and traffic flow is complex, traffic flow may not be smooth,” adding, “As congestion is expected, citizens are asked to use detour roads as much as possible and pay attention to the changed lane markings.”
