LG Electronics Receives 'SBTi Verification' for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target... First Domestic Home Appliance Company
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Electronics has recently taken a step closer to achieving 'Carbon Neutrality 2030' by having its greenhouse gas reduction targets verified by the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative).
The SBTi is a global coalition established in 2015 by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which verifies companies' greenhouse gas reduction targets.
In July, LG Electronics became the first domestic company to declare participation in the global campaign 'Business Ambition for 1.5℃,' which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This campaign is designed to proactively respond to the Paris Agreement on climate change, which seeks to limit the average global temperature increase to within 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels.
LG Electronics' greenhouse gas reduction targets set in line with this campaign include direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2) from the product manufacturing stage, as well as greenhouse gas emissions from the product usage stage (Scope 3).
According to the reduction targets, LG Electronics plans to reduce the total amount of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the product manufacturing stage by approximately 54% by 2030 compared to 2017. Additionally, greenhouse gas emissions from the product usage stage will be reduced by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020.
LG Electronics has had these reduction targets scientifically verified by the SBTi. Notably, LG Electronics is the first domestic home appliance company to receive SBTi verification.
To realize carbon neutrality and a circular economy, LG Electronics has set a goal to use a total of 600,000 tons of recycled plastic from this year through 2030. Furthermore, the amount of waste electronic products to be collected from 2006 to 2030 has been increased from the existing 4.5 million tons to 8 million tons.
