[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] LG Chem announced on the 31st that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) to jointly research and develop future core technologies.
Under this agreement, both parties will collaborate on sustainable technology fields such as carbon neutrality and biomass, as well as battery materials and artificial intelligence (AI). They plan to jointly develop catalytic technologies necessary for converting carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons, as well as bio-plastic production technologies using microorganisms. They will also brainstorm ways to build autonomous laboratories that operate without human intervention, including research on cathode active materials to increase battery capacity, automation of processing and analysis, and optimization of experimental design.
UNIST is a science and technology specialized university primarily researching new materials, bio, and next-generation energy, and hosts government-supported projects such as the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence and the Secondary Battery Research Center. The Secondary Battery Research Center is the largest among universities worldwide. Next year, the Carbon Neutrality Convergence Institute will open. LG Chem has committed to investing 10 trillion KRW by 2025 in eco-friendly materials, battery materials, and bio sectors. Synergy between the two institutions is expected during the demonstration and commercialization of research and development outcomes.
