Jeju Police Agency Launches Nation's First Pilot Operation of 'AI CCTV for Personal Protection'
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwangsoo) announced on the 29th that it will pilot operate the 'AI CCTV for Personal Protection' equipped with functions such as 'facial recognition,' 'intrusion detection,' and 'real-time emergency alerts' for the first time nationwide.
This is an improvement measure following criticism that the CCTV installed at the scene of the Jeju middle school student murder case in July only had recording functions, resulting in a 'reduced effect in ensuring real-time safety.'
The AI CCTV is designed to recognize the face of unregistered persons such as perpetrators when they wander around the house or intrude into a restricted area, and send real-time emergency alerts to the personal protection target, enabling 112 emergency reporting.
In particular, it is equipped with a function linked to the police station control room, allowing the police to respond quickly and monitor the situation in real time, such as whether the perpetrator has entered the residence or is wandering nearby, making it expected to be effective in ensuring the safety of personal protection targets.
The police agency plans to pilot operate five locations (two temporary points) until the end of this year (December 31), improve performance shortcomings, conduct mock drills (FTX) to prepare for actual situations, and verify the safety effect. Based on the pilot operation results of the Jeju agency, it plans to expand nationwide next year.
It is also negotiating with the Jeju CCTV control center to enable real-time monitoring, aiming to achieve synergy with public CCTV by preemptively identifying crime risk situations and tracking perpetrator escape routes.
A Jeju police official said, "We expect that the operation of AI CCTV for personal protection will further strengthen safety measures for personal protection targets," adding, "AI CCTV can be used to predict crime risk situations before incidents occur, enable rapid police dispatch and appropriate on-site measures during incidents, making it effective in preventing violent and retaliatory crimes."
He added, "In the future, we will devise various measures to secure the safety of personal protection targets in the province, verify their effectiveness, and then expand nationwide."
