Yeosu Coast Guard and GS Caltex Join Hands for Marine Plastic Waste Upcycling

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The Jeonnam Yeosu Maritime Police Station held an ‘Upcycling Product Joint Purchase Agreement Ceremony’ with GS Caltex for the marine plastic waste resource circulation project.

According to Yeosu Maritime Police, on the 27th, the chief of Yeosu Maritime Police and GS Caltex executives attended the ceremony at the GS Caltex Yeosu plant to share the progress of the marine plastic waste resource circulation project and to promote joint purchase and production activation of high-value eco-friendly products upcycled from marine plastic waste through a public-private cooperation agreement.

This public-private cooperation agreement ceremony was promoted as part of proactive administration to realize a circular economy and carbon neutrality through public-private cooperation, including joint purchase and production activation of eco-friendly products upcycled from marine plastic waste.

Since the resource circulation project began in March, about 80 tons (equivalent to 280,000 500ml PET bottles) of marine plastic waste have been collected. The eco-friendly company (Hyosung TNC) produces and supplies recycled yarn, and a social enterprise in the Yeosu area (Songgwang Happiness Town) transforms it into upcycled products such as safety vests and volunteer activity vests. Yeosu Maritime Police and GS Caltex then purchase and utilize these upcycled products.

A Yeosu Maritime Police official said, “We hope that this small step, which started with marine environmental protection, will not only highlight the importance of public-private cooperation and realize social value but also greatly contribute to leading an eco-friendly circular economy through production and consumption.”
