[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] O, who recently passed the local government civil service exam this year and is about to be assigned to Dongdaemun-gu, has had a deep connection with Dongdaemun-gu since his youth.
From 2010 to 2015, O received academic support through the 'Dongdaemun-gu Hope Dream-study' program conducted by Dongdaemun-gu, which provided free academy courses. This opportunity helped him enter university, and this year he achieved the great success of passing the civil service exam.
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is achieving significant results with the 'Dongdaemun-gu Hope Dream-study' program, which offers free academy courses to students from low-income families to provide equal educational opportunities and nurture talent for the future generation.
Since 2009, the district has signed agreements with the Dongdaemun-gu branch of the National Private Academy Association to support elementary, middle, and high school students from low-income families, such as basic livelihood security recipients and single-parent families, who find it difficult to attend academies due to financial difficulties, by providing free academy courses (provided by academies) and textbook fees (provided by the district). In 2011, the program expanded to include arts and physical education by signing an agreement with the Dongdaemun-gu branch of the National Music Academy Association.
Currently, 16 academies participate, and about 60 students receive free course benefits every month. The district is investing 70 million KRW this year to support the program.
Last year, the district supported a total of 651 students (225 elementary, 289 middle, and 137 high school students) with 70 million KRW through this program.
Especially last year and this year, despite difficulties in academy operations due to COVID-19, the Dongdaemun-gu Private and Music Education Council continued their steady talent donations, enabling students to keep receiving academy course opportunities.
