DL E&C to Build Modular Housing in Gurye and Buyeo, Jeonnam
Possessing Technology from Modular Unit Structure Fabrication to Finishing and Facilities
Enhancing Productivity and Quality by Integrating Weld-Free, PC Method, and Dry Finishing Technologies
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] DL E&C, accelerating the development of modular housing solutions, will supply modular houses to Gurye and Dongnam, Buyeo in Jeonnam Province.
On the 21st, DL E&C announced that it has secured technology related to the fabrication, installation, finishing, and facilities of modular units. Through ongoing modular housing projects, DL E&C plans to enhance fabrication productivity and quality to a new level and expand the adoption of related technologies in mid- to low-rise multi-family housing projects. Accordingly, a total of 176 modular housing units will be constructed in Gurye and Dongnam, Buyeo, projects commissioned by LH.
The newly developed technology simultaneously improves productivity and quality by minimizing welding, concrete pouring, and cement use. To move away from the conventional welded frame method of modular fabrication, DL E&C developed a bolt-based weld-free connector. Compared to the welding method that relies on skilled manual labor, this allows for more uniform quality and faster, safer fabrication. Additionally, a dry large-panel finishing material that replaces bathroom tiles and a unit-type layered piping system were developed.
The bolt-based weld-free connector and structural analysis images developed by DL E&C have also obtained certification from the Korean Society of Steel Construction through three-dimensional nonlinear analysis and structural testing.
New technology has also been developed to replace traditional concrete pouring and formwork work in foundation and core construction to ensure the structural stability of modular housing. The PC method was introduced for stairwell core construction. This method involves simply assembling factory-produced concrete core walls and stairs like Lego blocks, reducing construction time and ensuring uniform quality.
To secure structural support, technology was developed to directly transfer loads by connecting piles constructed in the ground to the modular structure. Utilizing this technology allows omission of the conventional concrete foundation slab work for load distribution, enabling a shorter construction period.

Since 2016, DL E&C has introduced modular construction technology in small-scale frame construction for multi-family housing. In 2017, modular methods were applied to elevator structures installed on apartment rooftops. Last year, modular methods were introduced in apartment security office construction, reducing a process that previously took over two months to just 30 minutes for installation. DL E&C is the first domestic construction company to file 19 patents related to modular structures, exteriors, and finishing.
