View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] On the morning of the 21st, the National Police Agency held the '76th Police Day' commemorative ceremony at the outdoor training ground of the Police Investigation Training Institute in Asan-si, Chungnam.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was held with only 49 internal and external guests, including Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum and National Police Agency Commissioner Kim Chang-ryong, attending in person, while connecting with police officers nationwide via video conference. Especially this year, marking the inaugural year of the National Investigation Headquarters and investigative authority adjustment, the Police Day ceremony was held for the first time at the Police Investigation Training Institute, adding significance to the event.
During the ceremony, tributes were paid to the police heroes of the year, the late Senior Superintendent An Maek-gyeol and the late Inspector Jeong Yeon-ho. Senior Superintendent An was a former independence activist who led the 1919 Pyongyang Manse Movement and served as the head of the Seoul Women’s Police Station, among other positions. Inspector Jeong died in the line of duty in December 2017 while trying to rescue a suicide attempt victim who was about to jump from an apartment.
In the awards for meritorious service, Inspector Jo Seong-moon of the Scientific Investigation Division at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency received the Green Stripes Order of Service Merit, Nurse Manager Kim Mi-jeong of the Police Hospital was awarded the Order of Service Merit, and Senior Superintendent Moon Bong-gyun of the Autonomous Police Department at the Busan Police Agency received the Presidential Citation. The Gyeongnam Police Agency and Mokpo Police Station were awarded the Presidential Group Citation.

At the ceremony, the police raised the banner of "Safety for the People, Fair Law Enforcement." Commissioner Kim Chang-ryong said, "As we enter the inaugural year of investigative authority reform and the autonomous police system, we will approach our duties with a renewed mindset and greater responsibility," adding, "Through continuous change and innovation, we will surely meet the expectations of the nation and the people and realize 'the safest country and a police force respected and loved by all.'"
