US Secretary of State Colin Powell Passes Away Due to COVID-19 Complications
Colin Powell, the first Black person to serve as Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, has passed away due to COVID-19 complications. He was 84 years old.
American media outlets including FOX News reported on the 18th (local time) that former Secretary Powell died from complications related to COVID-19 infection.
Powell, of Jamaican Black descent and born in New York, became the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989 during the Republican administration of George H.W. Bush (Senior Bush).
He was also appointed as the first Black Secretary of State in 2001 under President George W. Bush.
