Jeonju City, Politicians' Illegal Banners Cleared Without Exception
Plan to Remove Politician Banners Immediately Upon Discovery
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Ahead of next year's local elections, as illegal banners by politicians have surged, Jeonju City has decided to remove all illegal political banners without exception.
Jeonju City announced on the 18th that it plans to immediately remove illegal political banners found throughout the downtown area in order to eradicate illegal banners.
Recently, a large number of political banners targeting holidays such as Chuseok have been put up in the Jeonju area, causing not only aesthetic damage but also significantly threatening citizens' traffic safety.
Politicians have claimed the legitimacy of political banners based on the exemption conditions of Article 8 of the Outdoor Advertising Act and Article 37 (Freedom of Activity) Paragraph 2 of the Political Parties Act, making it difficult to regulate them.
In this regard, seven prospective candidates for next year's Jeonju mayoral election recently signed an agreement with environmental groups and media outlets not to put up illegal election banners and promised not to protest if they are removed.
Accordingly, Jeonju City has decided to immediately regulate illegal banners regardless of the responsible party or content upon discovery.
Prospective candidates for the Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education are also expected to join the agreement not to put up illegal election banners soon.
Jeonju City expects this to serve as a catalyst for eradicating illegal political banners.
Additionally, since discarded banners contribute to increased waste and emit harmful substances when incinerated, the regulation of banners is also expected to help protect the environment.
