Suncheon City Holds Memorial Ceremony for Korean War Hero Second Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin
A Time to Remember Tank-Slaying Phoenix and National Hero Sojwi Jodaljin
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 15th that it held the 3rd Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin Memorial Ceremony, remembering and honoring the war record of Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin, a hero of the Korean War known as the "Phoenix that took down tanks," at the Suncheon Culture and Arts Center the previous day.
The memorial ceremony was held in compliance with social distancing and quarantine guidelines to prevent COVID-19 infection, with about 90 attendees including Korean War veterans, bereaved families of war casualties, members of the Jo Dal-jin Battalion (Suncheon 7391 Unit, 5th Battalion), and heads of various organizations.
The event proceeded in order with the screening of a video about Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin’s war record, flower offering and incense burning, memorial speeches, and poetry readings. It was a meaningful time to emulate and remember Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin’s determination and spirit when he jumped onto enemy tanks and threw grenades to save his endangered homeland.
Chairman Ahn Kyung of the Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin Memorial Association, which has been organizing this event for the third time, said, “When the national heroes are not forgotten, the spirit of patriotism lives forever,” and added, “Let us remember the noble sacrifice of Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin, who did not hesitate to give his life to save the country.”

Im Chae-young, Deputy Mayor of Suncheon City, who attended the memorial ceremony, said, “Let us remember that the noble sacrifices of Lieutenant Jo Dal-jin and other veterans laid the foundation for the peace and prosperity of the Republic of Korea, and just as the entire nation united in the face of the national crisis 71 years ago, let us overcome the current hardships together amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.”
