[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Broker Joo Mo, who is accused of pocketing bribes in exchange for securing construction contracts related to the redevelopment project of Hakdong 4 District in Gwangju Metropolitan City, has been detained.
On the afternoon of the 13th, Judge Park Min-woo, in charge of warrants at the Gwangju District Court, issued an arrest warrant for Joo Mo, who is suspected of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act, citing concerns over evidence tampering.
Joo is accused of colluding with broker Lee Mo (74), who was already detained and indicted in March 2019, to receive over 100 million won from companies in exchange for securing construction contracts related to the redevelopment project of Hakdong Maintenance District 4.
All four brokers revealed in connection with this project have now been detained. Among them, two are currently on trial.
Earlier that day, after completing the pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant substantive examination) at the Gwangju District Court at 11 a.m., Joo remained silent with his head down when reporters asked questions such as "Do you admit to the charges?" and "Do you have any message for the bereaved families?"
A Gwangju Police Agency official stated, "The decision to detain the broker has been made, and the investigation is proceeding as planned. Once the investigation to prove the charges against them is completed, the focus will shift to investigating the construction companies and the union."
Meanwhile, on June 9, a building under demolition in the redevelopment of Hakdong 4 District in Dong-gu, Gwangju, collapsed and crushed a city bus. The accident resulted in 9 deaths and 8 serious injuries.
