Groundbreaking of 'Used Battery Industrialization Center' in Electric Vehicle City Ulsan ... Battery Industry Development Strategy Announced
Ulsan City Supports Entire Cycle from Manufacturing to Recycling... Aiming to Become the 'Global Secondary Battery Hub'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] In Ulsan, which has the best electric vehicle production base in Korea, a secondary battery industry development project has been launched.
Ulsan City announced a strategy to foster the secondary battery industry, the next-generation growth engine, and has begun establishing a research center to explore ways to utilize secondary batteries.
On the 13th at 10:30 a.m., Ulsan City announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the "Electric Vehicle Used Battery Industrialization Center" at the Nam-gu Techno General Industrial Complex, present the Ulsan Battery Industry Development Strategy, and sign a business agreement to promote the battery industry.
About 40 officials from 24 organizations, including Ulsan City and its council, local secondary battery-related companies, and related institutions, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The "Ulsan Battery Industry Development Strategy" announced that day envisions "leaping forward as a global strong small and medium-sized enterprise hub city centered on secondary batteries," and includes comprehensive support for the entire industrial cycle from the basics to applications of battery manufacturing.
It plans to maximize Ulsan's capabilities such as technological prowess, growth conditions, and human resources to enhance competitiveness.
To realize this vision, the "Six Major Projects for Ulsan Battery Industry Development" will also be promoted.
The six major projects are △support for commercialization technology development of next-generation and high-performance batteries △operation of a future-type battery specialized strong research and development zone △training of secondary battery specialists △establishment of a high-functionality convergence chemical materials support center △performance evaluation and certification support for medium and large secondary batteries △construction of the Electric Vehicle Used Battery Industrialization Center.
By 2030, it aims to establish a comprehensive support base for the entire secondary battery cycle, attract global strong small and medium-sized enterprises based on research and development, and train 200 specialists annually.
The "Electric Vehicle Used Battery Industrialization Center" construction project, whose groundbreaking ceremony was held that day, is attracting attention as a groundbreaking project that will lead the growth of Ulsan's battery industry.
This project involves collecting used batteries from electric vehicles, disassembling, sorting, evaluating, and reassembling them for reuse and recycling, pioneering a new market called the "post-use battery industry."
Once the "Electric Vehicle Used Battery Industrialization Center" is completed early next year, it is expected to utilize the characteristics of secondary batteries capable of charging and reuse in energy storage systems (ESS), uninterruptible power supplies for power outages or leakage, and recovery of precious metals.
Additionally, efforts will continue to expand the battery industry's base through business model development for used battery utilization and training of specialists.
Ulsan City, Ulsan Technopark, and 18 organizations including local secondary battery-related companies have also promoted a "Joint Declaration of Business Cooperation for the Development of Ulsan's Battery Industry."
These organizations agreed to actively cooperate on implementing the battery industry development strategy, technology development for research, commercialization, reuse, and recycling, sharing research outcomes, supporting human resource training, and securing global competitiveness.
Song Cheol-ho, Mayor of Ulsan, said, "Utilizing Korea's number one electric vehicle production base, we expect to lead the used battery industry and become a global secondary battery hub city, Ulsan."
