[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A newborn who was abandoned in a food waste bin by her biological mother and was rescued in a dramatic manner is recovering her health and is about to be discharged.
According to Cheongju City on the 13th, the newborn who was rescued on August 21 and was receiving treatment at Chungbuk National University Hospital has recovered her health after 55 days of hospitalization and will be discharged tomorrow (14th).
The newborn's biological mother, Ms. A (25), was arrested and indicted on charges of abandoning her newborn child in a food waste bin placed in front of a restaurant in Cheongju around 8 a.m. on August 18.
The child was discovered by a passerby who happened to hear the baby crying around 3 a.m. on the 21st of the same month and opened the lid of the food waste bin.
The newborn, who had been trapped inside the bin for at least 67 hours, was transported to Chungbuk National University Hospital by the 119 rescue team. At that time, medical staff explained that "the baby was receiving nutrients from the remaining umbilical cord, so there was no immediate threat to life." However, due to being confined in a narrow space for a long time, some parts of the body had wounds that were decaying and progressing to skin necrosis, and symptoms of sepsis were also observed.
The newborn hospitalized at Chungbuk National University Hospital gradually regained health after undergoing several skin suture surgeries. Support from citizens continued, with donations amounting to approximately 149 million won collected through the Chungbuk Social Welfare Community Chest support account.
After discharge, the child is expected to be admitted to a local child protection facility. This is because the prosecution last month indicted the biological mother, Ms. A, on charges of attempted murder and also requested the loss of parental rights. It is also reported that the biological mother's family expressed their refusal to raise the child.
