Jeju Air "1 in 2 Domestic Flight Check-ins Done via Mobile"
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Since the COVID-19 pandemic, as non-face-to-face interactions have become routine, the proportion of passengers using mobile devices for flight check-in has increased.
On the 12th, Jeju Air analyzed the check-in methods of domestic passengers from January to September this year. Out of a total of 4.66 million passengers, 2.43 million (52.1%) completed their check-in via mobile devices. Compared to the same period last year, when 1.17 million (39.6%) out of 2.97 million domestic passengers used mobile check-in, the number of users increased by 2.1 times and the usage rate rose by 12.5 percentage points.
On the other hand, kiosk check-in (Muan ticketing machines), which had the highest usage rate of 47% in 2020, dropped to 34.5%, a decrease of 12.5 percentage points compared to last year.
Jeju Air analyzed that the increase in mobile check-in and the decrease in kiosk usage are due to mobile devices being usable anytime and anywhere without restrictions, and the growing interest in contactless methods after COVID-19, which has increased the desire to use personal devices rather than shared facilities used by many people.
However, passengers using the traditional manned counter check-in slightly increased from 12.1% in 2020 to 12.3% this year.
This is explained by the fact that new routes were launched in the second half of last year at airports such as Muan and Gunsan, where kiosks are not installed, and users unfamiliar with mobile check-in used the existing counters.
Check-in via PC web accounted for 1.1%, slightly down from 1.3% last year. When using a mobile device for check-in, passengers who do not check baggage can proceed directly to security screening without going through the counter, and even if they check baggage, pre-check-in via mobile reduces the time needed for boarding pass issuance at the counter.
