[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who has been accused of improperly intervening in a World Bank report to help China in the past, is not expected to be pressured by the United States to step down, according to IMF board members.
On the 11th (local time), Bloomberg News reported that "the United States appears to be paving the way for Georgieva to remain in her position."
A source familiar with the matter said that the United States expressed this stance during the IMF board meeting held that day. As the largest shareholder of the IMF, the United States holds significant influence over IMF policy decisions.
The U.S. Treasury Department and IMF spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
The IMF board held a meeting lasting about five hours that day to review the allegations related to Managing Director Georgieva and decided to determine her continuation in office soon.
Earlier, in September 2019, Georgieva took office as IMF Managing Director. Last month, allegations surfaced that during her tenure, she pressured the manipulation of the 2018 Corporate Environment Assessment Report in a way favorable to China.
Following this, the United States expressed "serious" concerns, leading to speculation that Georgieva's continuation as Managing Director had become uncertain.
However, major countries such as France and the United Kingdom stated that no evidence unfavorable to Managing Director Georgieva has yet emerged and expressed their intention to withhold judgment until the results of the IMF's internal investigation are released.
