[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 11th urged Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province who advanced to the presidential election as the ruling party's candidate, to "resign from the position of Governor of Gyeonggi Province as soon as possible."
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that afternoon, Leader Song said, "From now on, Governor Lee is not just a simple Governor of Gyeonggi Province, but the proud Democratic Party candidate of the ruling party of the Republic of Korea," adding, "He should promptly resign from the position of Governor of Gyeonggi Province and quickly register as a preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party presidential candidate to fully prepare for the presidential election."
He stated, "Because the party primary was ongoing, there was insufficient response to the Daejang-dong issue so far," and added, "We will form a countermeasure committee within the party regarding the construction corruption of the People Power Party related to Daejang-dong and respond on a party-wide basis."
He continued, "We will reveal one by one how much this has been distorted by the People Power Party and misused by the media," emphasizing, "We will turn this into an opportunity to confirm how well Seongnam City has actually performed."
