[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A middle-aged son forcibly brought his 80-year-old father, who suffers from dementia, home because he did not want to place him in a care facility. Angered, the father killed his sleeping son that night.
The Daegu District Court's 11th Criminal Division (Chief Judge Lee Sang-oh) sentenced 80-year-old Mr. A to 2 years and 6 months in prison on the charge of murder for killing his son who was caring for him. The court also ordered medical treatment and probation.
Mr. A, who suffers from dementia, was indicted for killing his sleeping son with a weapon at his home in Daegu on April 2.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A committed the crime after refusing to return home from a daytime care facility the day before, but his son forcibly brought him home, which angered him.
The middle-aged son had been living with Mr. A at his home to care for his father's illness. Mr. A is also charged with injuring his wife by hitting her face when she tried to report the incident to the police.

The court stated, "Although the defendant does not remember, the crime committed is horrific and unfilial, and the damage is severe. However, considering his old age, dementia, and the fact that he was in a diminished mental state with impaired judgment and decision-making abilities, it seems that serving a long sentence would not have much meaning," explaining the sentencing rationale.
