During 2021 Art Week, Experience a Sentimental 'Mu-cance' in Gwangyang
Enjoy Artworks at Jeonnam Provincial Art Museum and Autumn Scenery Outside the Museum
Discover Your Preferences: Seocheon Cosmos, Silvery Seomjin River, Baealdo Island Garden, and More
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, recommends a "Mucance" (Museum + Vacation) to enjoy high-quality exhibitions at museums and travel through the emotionally rich autumn of Gwangyang in celebration of the 2021 Art Week starting October 7.
The Mucance experience in Gwangyang involves viewing the prestigious exhibitions at the Jeonnam Provincial Museum of Art and enjoying the scenery outside the museum, such as the cosmos along Seocheon, the silvery Seomjin Riverbank, and the Baedo Island Garden.
The Jeonnam Provincial Museum of Art, perfectly aligned with Art Week, is gaining attention by consecutively hosting special exhibitions such as the "Lee Kun-hee Collection Special Exhibition," "Master of Korean Calligraphy Sojeon Son Jaehyung," "AES+F. Lost Hybrid, Grinding the Era," and the collection exhibition "Stories of That Day."
In the Lee Kun-hee Collection Special Exhibition and the Sojeon Son Jaehyung Exhibition, which have passed more than half of their schedules, visitors can experience 21 masterpieces by masters like Kim Whanki and Chun Kyungja, as well as the subtle ink scent and the texture of calligraphy and literati paintings.
The first-ever domestic planned exhibition of the Russian four-member group "AES+F," which overturns conventional values and hierarchies and attracts global attention, stimulates visitors' imagination and poses profound questions.
The collection exhibition "Stories of That Day" offers a meaningful time to revisit the Donghak Peasant Revolution, the Korean War, and the May 18 Democratic Movement through video, media, and sculptures realized by artists such as Nam June Paik, Lim Heungsun, and Koo Bonju.
Stepping outside the museum, the beautiful autumn scenery of Gwangyang awaits.
Autumn in Gwangyang begins with the cosmos along the Seocheon riverside waving in the wind.
Although the Gwangyang Charcoal Grill Festival held annually by the Seocheon riverside has been paused for three years due to COVID-19 and other reasons, flowers still bloom and people’s processions continue.
The Seomjin River, bathed in autumn sunlight, sparkles like a jewel as it flows into Mangdeok Port, and its slow currents offer peace and rest to weary modern people.
The beautiful island garden Baedo has been connected to Mangdeok Port and Baedo Neighborhood Park by the Star Counting Bridge and Sunrise Bridge.
When the short early autumn sun casts shadows, the landscapes of the waterfront, island, and port all become picturesque scenes.
If the artworks displayed in the museum were born from the human soul, the scenery outside the museum is a landscape painted by nature.
Park Soon-gi, Director of Tourism, said, "For the 7th Art Week, we hope visitors enjoy the diverse and high-quality exhibitions such as the Lee Kun-hee Collection Special Exhibition and the Sojeon Son Jaehyung Exhibition at the Jeonnam Provincial Museum of Art in Gwangyang."
He added, "Once you leave the museum, you will find landscapes painted by nature that no artist can express, filling every corner of Gwangyang. We hope visitors breathe in the autumn to their heart’s content at places like Seocheon, Seomjin River, and Baedo, and find comfort for their weary hearts from COVID-19."
