Seoul City Installs 2,941 'Smart Security Lights' in 13 Residential Areas
Automatically Brightens When Approaching Security Lights and Flashes When Smartphone Is Shaken in Emergencies for Location Confirmation
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government is installing ‘smart security lights’ that automatically brighten when a person approaches, to ensure the safety of vulnerable groups returning home through dark and secluded alleyways.
According to Seoul City on the 7th, the city will replace 2,941 old security lights in 13 residential areas across 10 autonomous districts by the end of the year. The ‘smart security lights’ are LED lights equipped with IoT (Internet of Things) signal devices based on near-field communication networks. They operate in connection with Seoul’s ‘Ansim-i app,’ which supports citizens’ safe return home.
When users turn on the Ansim-i app and activate ‘Safe Return Monitoring,’ walking through alleys equipped with smart security lights will cause the lights to automatically brighten when approaching within 25 to 30 meters, illuminating dark night paths. By replacing the existing low-visibility security lights with LED security lights, citizens walking the streets will be able to recognize their surroundings and objects more clearly and brightly.
In addition, in case of an emergency, shaking the smartphone connects the Ansim-i app’s ‘Emergency Report’ to the CCTV control centers of each autonomous district and police stations immediately, while the smart security lights flash. It is expected that not only the dispatched police but also nearby pedestrians will be able to quickly identify the location of the danger.
Seoul City plans to expand the installation next year as well. The city will simultaneously promote projects to maximize the safety of residential environments in areas where ‘smart security lights’ are installed, building an integrated regional safety network. Projects that can create synergy, such as expanding CCTV installation, local patrols using Ansim Village security guards, and alley-level living environment improvements through the application of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), will be promoted together.
