Sinan-gun, Dochodo Paengnamu 10-ri Street Wins Excellence Award in Urban Forest Street Tree Category
Nation's First County-Level Award... Jeonnam Province Achieves 2nd Place Nationwide Following 2020 Urban Forest Award
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) was selected for the Excellence Award in the Street Tree category at the '2021 Green City Best Practices' contest hosted by the Korea Forest Service on the 27th of last month.
According to the county on the 6th, it was the only county-level local government among 226 local governments nationwide to participate in the contest, and despite financial independence compared to metropolitan local governments and the vulnerable geographical conditions of island areas, it was the only one among 85 county-level local governments to receive the Excellence Award.
The contest hosted by the Korea Forest Service has been promoted since 2007 with the purpose of discovering, sharing, and spreading well-established cases in three categories: urban forests, street trees, and fine dust blocking forests, to raise public awareness of the necessity of urban forests and to improve the quality of projects, such as mitigating heat waves and reducing fine dust.
The “Garden of Fantasy” on Paengnamu 10-ri Road in Dochodo, Sinan-gun, received 716 Paengnamu trees aged 60 to 100 years donated from all over the country and planted them. It previously won the grand prize in the urban forest category of the '2020 Green City Best Practices' hosted by Jeollanam-do. Due to active budget-saving efforts, the cost-effectiveness of creation and post-management was considerably high.
