"Thorough Merit-Based Personnel... Early October Appointments to Revitalize Atmosphere"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Shinsegae Group has launched a large-scale executive reshuffle, including the replacement of heads of the department store division. The strategy is to revitalize the organizational atmosphere, which tends to become lax due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to start preparing next year's strategies early.
On the 1st, Shinsegae Group announced the 2022 regular executive appointments, naming Son Young-sik, former CEO of Shinsegae DF, as the new CEO of Shinsegae. Born in February 1963, Son graduated from Daegu Simin High School, earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from Sogang University, and a master's degree in Business Administration from Yonsei University. After joining Shinsegae Department Store in 1987, he served as MD2 Head of the Accessories Team, Executive Director in charge of MD3 at Shinsegae Department Store Division, Vice President and Head of Shinsegae Product Headquarters, and Vice President and Head of Shinsegae Fashion Headquarters. In 2015, he was Vice President in charge of Business and Sales at Shinsegae DF, and in 2016, he became CEO of Shinsegae DF. The previous CEO of Shinsegae, Cha Jung-ho, has moved to the department store division.
At Shinsegae International, Lee Gil-han, CEO of the Cosmetics Division, has been appointed as the overall CEO and will also oversee the Fashion Division. Born in September 1962, he graduated from Jinju High School and Seoul National University with a degree in Trade. He joined Samsung C&T in 1984, served as Executive Director of Hotel Shilla Duty-Free Distribution Business Division, Senior Executive Director of the MD Headquarters, and Senior Executive Director of the Marketing Headquarters. In 2015, he was CEO of HDC Shilla Duty-Free. Afterward, he served as Vice President and Head of Global Division 2 at Shinsegae International in 2017 and became CEO of the Cosmetics Division at Shinsegae International in 2018.
Choi Moon-seok, former CEO of YogiYettae Company and an e-commerce expert, has been recruited as CEO of Shinsegae Casa. Born in June 1968, he graduated from Gunsan Dong High School, earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from Yonsei University, and a master's degree in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Starting as a Brand Manager in the Marketing Department at Procter & Gamble Korea in 1992, he worked as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, CEO of Burger King Korea, Vice President at Selvic (a Kolon affiliate), and Marketing Strategy Director at Samsung Life Insurance. Later, he became Vice President of eBay Korea in 2006, CEO of Summers Platform (formerly Enuri.com), and CEO of YogiYettae Company, establishing himself as an e-commerce expert.
With this, the department store division has replaced the heads of five organizations in total: Shinsegae, Shinsegae International, Shinsegae Casa, the department store division itself, and Mindmark, which appointed a new CEO in July.
Shinsegae Group stated that this large-scale executive reshuffle focused on "preparing for the future, strengthening core competencies, and nurturing talent," implementing a thorough meritocracy and competency-based personnel system. By advancing the appointments to early October, earlier than usual, the group aims to revitalize the organizational atmosphere, which tends to become lax due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to enable early preparation for next year's strategies.
Shinsegae Group emphasized that it has strengthened preparations for the online era and the discovery of future new businesses across all business sectors. The company explained, "We have secured a solid talent base for the future by recruiting external experts from various fields and selecting capable internal talents."
The Emart division also actively recruited outstanding external talents from various fields this year.
