Boseong-gun, Opening of the 23rd Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival Competition
From July 1 to 3, Nationwide Pansori and Gosu Competition
Live Video Streaming on YouTube, Recorded Broadcast on KBS1TV
[Boseong=Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheon-seok] Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Soon-ho) announced on the 29th that the 23rd Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival will be held as a no-audience competition from the 1st to the 3rd of next month.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, large-scale performances and experience programs that could cause crowd gatherings will not be held, and only essential programs such as memorial performances and competitions will be conducted.
The competition will be divided into Pansori and Gosu categories, with sections for master singers and master drummers, university and general divisions, rookie division, student division, and overall student division, proceeding through preliminary and final rounds.
All competitions will be broadcast live via YouTube on four channels: Boseong-gun, Boseong-gun Culture and Arts Center, Boseong Pansori Sacred Site, and Boseong Cultural Center.
In particular, the final round of the Pansori master singer division will be broadcast nationwide on KBS1TV at 3 p.m. on the 12th of next month.
The event will be hosted by master singer Park Ae-ri and will feature a congratulatory performance with intangible cultural asset Pansori masters Jeong Hoe-seok, Lee Nan-cho, and Seo Ui-cheol’s band.
Additionally, during the competition period, a professional quarantine company will manage the competition venue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and all participants including contestants and judges must test negative for COVID-19 within 48 hours prior to attendance to participate in the festival.
From this competition onward, the eligibility criteria for participation in the Pansori master singer division have been raised.
To select a master singer suitable for the Presidential Award level, the county has changed the participation criteria so that only those who have completed one of the five Pansori madangs in full or have held a recital of more than two hours can participate.
Also, a 20-member audience evaluation panel system will be introduced in the final judging of the Pansori master singer division, and their scores will be reflected in the total judging score.
Meanwhile, the county has played a pivotal role in the development of Korean traditional music as the birthplace of many master Pansori singers such as Park Yoo-jeon, the founder of Seopyeonje, Jeong Eung-min who established Boseong Sori, Jeong Gwon-jin, Seong Woo-hyang, Jo Sang-hyun, and Seong Chang-soon. To inherit and develop this legacy, the Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival is held annually to discover talent through nationwide competitions and to continue the tradition of Pansori.
