On the 28th, Pohang City announced that it conducted an on-site inspection of the "Fine Dust Blocking Urban Forest Creation Project" being promoted in Jenae-ri, Daesong-myeon, Nam-gu.
This project is a life-oriented SOC project designed to protect residents of nearby villages exposed to various pollutants such as fine dust and odors generated from the industrial complex area.
It is being promoted to reduce fine dust, alleviate urban heat islands and heatwaves, and provide comfortable green spaces for local residents.
Pohang City completed land compensation from last year to early this year, started construction in March, and is currently in the finishing stages with a progress rate of 95%, aiming for completion in September.
The Daesong-myeon fine dust blocking forest is located between the industrial and residential areas.
On an area of 4,300㎡, a buffer role to reduce fine dust and odors has been established by planting 29,337 various trees including large trees such as pine and elm.
In addition to exercise equipment and convenience facilities, a forest trail for walking has also been created, receiving great response from residents.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, "We will plant many trees for local residents who have been withdrawn due to the impact of COVID-19 so that they can enjoy a healthy life in green spaces."
The mayor added, "We will contribute to responding to climate change and achieving carbon neutrality, effectively reduce damage from heatwaves and fine dust, and ensure that citizens receive various benefits from the forest."
Pohang City plans to continuously promote the creation of fine dust blocking forests to improve air quality in areas adjacent to the steel industrial complex for fine dust reduction.
