According to Muan County, the Anti-Relocation Committee Against Moving the Gwangju Combat Airfield to Muan (hereafter the Committee) and Muan County institutions and social organizations held a rally condemning the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Gwangju Metropolitan City on the morning of the 28th at Muan International Airport.
The event was attended by Kim San, head of Muan County, Kim Dae-hyun, chairman of the Muan County Council, members of the Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee, and members of Muan County institutions and social organizations. They raised their voices saying, "Do not demand further relocation of the Gwangju military airport to Muan."
They also declared a strong future stance of struggle, saying, "We do not need the Gwangju military airport or the civilian airport," and "Close Muan Airport."
Kim San, head of Muan County, recently stated in a press release, "I cannot understand why the military airport relocation, which is completely unrelated to the civilian airport integration, was suddenly included in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 6th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan instead of the Ministry of National Defense."
Kim said, "The original purpose of revitalizing Muan International Airport has disappeared, and this will remain a wrong administrative case that only increases conflicts and divisions between regions," adding, "We will take stronger measures to block the military airport relocation."
Park Moon-jae, chairman of the Committee, said, "I cannot hide my suspicion that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which promised to promote the revitalization of Muan Airport through the integrated relocation of civilian airports, overstepped the Ministry of National Defense's duties by announcing a plan tailored to Gwangju City's preferences regarding the military airport relocation. I wonder if there was some kind of deal between the two agencies."
He continued, "Who would trust and support national policies that are easily overturned like flipping the palm of a hand? The responsibility and criticism for the 6th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan, which was based on wrong assumptions and only deepened wounds, should be borne entirely by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which made the wrong policy decisions, and Gwangju City, which showed the worst of secretive administration," he condemned.
He added, "The people of Muan are wise and strong, so this decision will serve as an opportunity to unite the residents even more," emphasizing, "We will not yield to any pressure or political tricks and will definitely prevent the relocation of the Gwangju military airport to Muan."
